Push Across Cayman, Saturday 24 November 2012

Message from Mike McDonald, Stay-Focused

Friends,

As some of you may be aware we are holding a 5k run/jog this Saturday at Camana Bay at 6am to raise funds for Stay-Focused.  I’ve been involved with Stay-Focused since 2007 and it’s a great organization which I am proud to be a part.  The run costs CI 25 and/but all proceeds go directly to Stay-Focused.  You will receive a t-shirt and refreshments during/after the race.  You can register the morning of the race (from 5:30) so no worries.  Come out and support us and use it as a final tempo run for the CI Marathon/Half/Relay!

At 7am we invite you to join Ryan for his Push Across Cayman as he pushes his racing chair around the island (link to bike course below).  At 12/13mph with several short stops we expect this to take about 5 hours, returning to Camana Bay around 12 noon.  We expect 20+ cyclists will join Ryan along with our police escorts, Red Cross vehicle and professional videographer.  This is one of our events building up to Ryan’s Push Across America in the Spring of 2013 where Ryan will be pushing from Los Angeles to New York City.

Please check-out our website http://www.stay-focused.org/ or visit the Push Across America page on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/#!/PushUSA for more information about Ryan and Stay-Focused.

Please join us for the run (and cycle) if you can.  Please note that there will also be a Family Fun Carnival at Camana Bay from noon to 3pm on Saturday with games for the kids.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mike

Start/Finish: Bodden Town Police Station (start will be next to football field car park)
Course: Turn around at High Rock Rd., East End and back.

Two-Up or Two-Man Team Time Trial

The event sees two cyclist teaming up to race against the clock, just like Individual Time Trial event, but with both riders riding at the same time as a two person team in signal file to maximise speed and aerodynamics, each taking turns at the front.
The two cyclists will start side by side and both have to complete the course to record their finish time. The time is stopped when the last cyclist back wheel crosses the finish line.

Teaming Up

The cyclists will find and pair up their own team. This includes ladies, juniors, masters and men open class divisions. We encourage all now to sign on-line with Cayman Active, by doing so instead of waiting to sign up on race day, it will give you time to warm up on race day and us a smoother set up.

Rules

Same rules apply as in Individual Time Trial, e.g. if a team is caught, you are to  pass them on their right hand side in a signal formation.

Refreshments will be served.

So don’t wait any longer. Get your team together and click here to register at CaymanActive.com

If you are not able to find a team then comment to this post, so others can see you’re looking for a team partner, giving them a chance to contact you in order to team up.

Jamaica Reggae Ride, 3 or 6 days, November 2012

Great opportunity to go on a 3 or 6 day bike ride in Jamaica from Negril in the west to Port Antonio/Kingston in the east. The daily rides range from 55 to 68 miles. Packages including airport transfers and hotel are available, as are packages with only the rides.

Read all about the rides including prices on their website by clicking here.

The following is an excerpt from their website:

The Jamaica Reggae Ride 2012 will take cyclists on a 3 or 6 day, approx 175 or 350 mile escorted bike ride across the island of Jamaica. The route passes through stunning landscapes, passing coconut & banana plantations, white sand beaches and through quaint fishing villages. The first three days are along the northcoast whilst days 4 and 5 will take us inland on a more challenging route.

There will be some fast flats and a few climbs, but we cater to ALL pace levels. If you are an elite cyclist, be prepared to be challenged by the island’s top champions and if you are a novist or intermediate cyclist, know that we make it fun for everyone and there is full service support at all times along the way. Last year we split into two groups: elites and beginners, and 2012 will probably be the same.

Last year we had visitors from a spinning class in FLorida who had never been on a road bike, and they made it. Our guides are excellent! THey are patient and thoughtful and if you need a gentle push, they’ll gladly oblige! Our Elite guides put our strongest guests to the tests and smiled the whole time! So those of you who think you are strong…bring it ON! Our Police escorts are with us all the time and if you need to take a break, there are always support vehicles, and lots of fruits, gatorate and snacks to keep you energized.

Be prepared to be spoiled!

Our stops are well planned so as to ensure everyone experiences the real Jamaica: we will have a rest stop at a farmer’s market, have a visit with local school children and climb a cascading 600ft waterfall! The Jamaican people are warm and genuinely friendly. You’ll get to meet them up close and in their real world! There is time in the afternoons to meet up with fellow cyclists, spouses and friends to explore the island’s beaches, restaurants and attractions or to take in a massage or visit a spa.

So come on, let’s ride!
Let us show you why Jamaica is truly the “heartbeat” of the Caribbean

CycloPrep 2012, 26 May

What is CycloPrep?    CycloPrep is a funding raising cycling event organised each year by your PTA. The aim is for the kids to have fun, be fit and to raise money for the school.

Where is the event being held:  As in 2011, this year’s event is being held in Crystal Harbour. The starting point is the Grand Caymanian Resort, on Crighton Drive.

What time does the event start? Participants may start the course at any time between 7:00am and 8:00am.

What do we do when we arrive? Each participant must register at the registration table.  Wristbands will be given to each participant and to each additional person who has purchased a breakfast ticket.

What time does the course close? The course closes at 9:00am. No riders will be permitted on the course after this time.

What do the children do:  Depending on their age, the children have a target number of miles to cycle which are as follows:

Target Distance 1 mile 2 miles 4 miles 5 miles 6 miles
Year Group KG & Yr 1 Year 2 & Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 Year 6

What is the minimum sponsorship to participate? The minimum sponsorship is $30 per child.

Can my child ride without a helmet? NO ABSOLUTELY NOT!!  No participant (adult or child) will be allowed to ride without a helmet.

Will there be water stations? Yes, there will be staffed water stations throughout the course.

Will there be first aid stations? Yes, there will be one first aid station staffed by medical professionals half-way through the course.

Can I ride, walk or run alongside my child? Yes! We encourage parents to participate.

What do we do when my child(ren) finishes cycling? Each participant must check out at the registration table and the number of miles completed will be recorded.

What happens next? Participants are encouraged to stay for breakfast (included in their registration) that will be served from 8:00am to 10:00am.  For every two children who participate in CycloPrep, one parent will receive a wristband entitling them to a free breakfast. The cost of breakfast for additional adults and non-participating children is $10 each.  You must purchase these tickets in advance by indicating the number of additional breakfast tickets needed on your child’s sponsorship form.  So that we can keep the costs reasonable for all of our families, the PTA does not profit from the sale of breakfast tickets.

What other amenities are there? The Grand Caymanian Resort is allowing all participants to use the beach and pool facilities so don’t forget your swimsuit!  Please note however that you must supervise your children in the pool and on the beach at all times.

Will there be prizes? Yes! To encourage our young cyclists we will be offering prizes during a follow up assembly in the following categories:

  • Largest number of sponsors – infants;
  • Largest number of sponsors – juniors;
  • Most sponsorship $ – infants;
  • Most sponsorship $ – juniors;
  • Class with the most participants;
  • One house-point will also be awarded for each mile that each child cycles; and
  • One very special surprise!

 To participate, your sponsorship form and waiver must be handed into the office by Wednesday 23rd May 2012.

 Help needed: To make this a successful event we need help from parents and teachers.  Please contact Deborah Bodden if you can assist on 938-0208 or e-mail her at deborah.bodden@gov.ky

Cayman Classics 2012

It’s that time of the year again when the Cayman Classics start. Sunday 29 April marks the start of the series, this year kicking off with a 40 mile road race with a rolling start from Grand Harbour looping East End once and back towards George Town with a finish line on the bypass between Lantern Point and Grand Harbour.
Along the route are also two sprints (The first sprint will take place just outside Cottage, and the second sprint shortly after passing the Reef Resort in East End), which starting this year will not count towards the general standing but will be a competition on its own. Also only the three first crossing the sprint’s finish line will gather points regardless of which division they are competing in.

As previous years there will be competed in 4 divisions; Junior (girls & boys aged 12-17 years), Open Men (aged 18-39), Open Ladies (aged 18+), Masters Men (aged 40+). Junior and Master riders may choose to compete in the Open division but will by doing so forfeit their place in any other division and will only compete in the Open division.

Not only has the sprints been taking out of the general standing but the scoring for the general standings has also changed, so there will be 25 points for 1st, 18 for 2nd, 15 for 3rd, 12 for 4th, 10 for 5th, 8 for 6th, 6 for 7th, 4 for 8th, 2 for 9th and 1 for 10th. We anticipate that the larger spread between the points will make for a more intense and interesting series, where the riders will have to fight and give it all for the points.

You can sign up for the series now online at CaymanActive and offline registration will be available at the Cayman Helicopter’s office on the seafront in George Town on Saturday 28 April from 11am to 2pm.

You can either sign up for individual races (CI$ 15.00 / US$ 18.30) or the entire series (CI$ 50.00 / US$ 61.00). Juniors get off a bit cheaper with individual races costing CI$ 10.00 (US$ 12.20) and the entire series CI$ 30.00 (US$ 37.00).

The entire series of 5 races are scheduled as follows:
Race 1: 40 Mile Road Race – Sunday 29th April
Race 2: 5 Mile Individual Time Trial – Sunday 6th May
Race 3: Circuit Race 45 minutes & 3 laps – Sunday 13th May
Race 4: 10-Mile Individual Time Trial – Sunday 20th May
Race 5: 65-Mile Road Race – Sunday 27th May

So sign up now and join us on Sunday for the Cayman Classics kick off!

By clicking on the following link you can download the Classics Race Rules 2012

This year also sees the introduction of a leaders jersey, so everyone knows who to chase down at each individual race. For you to take a look at the jersey design before you pull it over your head or chase it down on the road follow this link Cayman Classics 2012 Race jerseys

In the meantime while you wait for the races to begin here are a couple of good reads in how to pin on your number:

iSport – How to pin your bicycle race number

The Ultimate Number Pinning Manifesto

As to which side of the jersey: The left, so no matter what the articles state, pin the number so it sits on your left side.

Good luck to all the competitors!
